Two Month Update!

We've now made it through two months! And boy, have we been busy! Busy meeting new people, busy discovering new things, and busy growing, growing, GROWING! It's exciting and crazy to see just how much Emma changes in just one month.  Here are some highlights from our experiences over the past month:
  • Emma started smiling - yay! At first, we thought it was just gas. But then, she started doing it more frequently (the smiling, not the gas...well, at least not at the same time). In the beginning, Emma would mostly just smile at me, especially when I came to pick her up from staying at Mimi's house while I was at work. I think this hurt Kevin's feelings a little bit because she didn't really smile at him right away. But now, she smiles a lot, especially at Kevin's silliness. Emma's not shy either, she smiles at lots of different people (see the picture in our previous post of her and Dalia).

  • Along with her smiling, came the start of her "baby talk" phase. She coos, giggles, and shouts all day long. We start our mornings (and after every nap) with just talking to her on the changing table. Some days, she very quiet and pensive, and some days, she's just exploding with things to tell us. There's something about hearing her make her little happy sounds that just warms your heart.

  • Of course, along with happy sounds comes the angry ones. When Emma is upset, Emma is upset. She's got a good pair of lungs on her too. We're still trying to figure out what all of her different cries are - but there's a definite difference when she's angry, hurting, or just faking it. And yes, she does this - it's usually when she's just annoyed and gives us these little bursts of cries but can't put enough effort in it to sustain it. Recently, Kevin told Emma that if she was really serious about crying, then she should at least stop watching the TV to do it.

mama was desperate.

  • Speaking of the television, Emma is very captivated by all things that include lights, sounds, or movement. Her play gym still holds her attention for a little while, especially since she's starting to reach out for things. But she's also just content to stare at the ceiling fans. She did discover the TV at her Mimi's house though, and it doesn't matter what's on, it fascinates her. While we don't plop her in front of it 24/7, it is sometimes the only cure for a colicky episode...seriously.

  • She's gotten big enough to find time in her bouncer and swing actually entertaining. She definitely likes the bouncer more so far. I think it's because she controls the motion, and she likes to kick her legs while she's in it. Also, it's apparently good for taking naps in. Kevin and Emma have both been known to sit in their respective chairs and zonk out.

Success - no one is screaming,
"She's touching me"

  • Lizzy has warmed up to Emma a lot more now. I think she's starting to realize that we're keeping the baby because we keep bringing Emma back home. Lizzy does still sniff around Emma and is great to have around to tell us when Emma's diaper needs changing. Lizzy gives her puppy kisses when we let her, but the biggest sign of acceptance is the fact that Lizzy lets Emma touch or lay down by her. Now granted, it might be because Emma has a blanket, and Lizzy loves blankets...but we'll take what we can get.

  • Lastly, since it's summer, we have decided to try out swimming. Our first foray into water fun was in the bathtub. We filled it up, I got in with her, and we let her experience floating around in the water. And, she LOVED it. In fact, when I tried to sit her up, she would arch her back so she could lay back down and float. Now, the plus side to swimming in the bathtub is that there's no chlorine, there's no chance of sunburn, but most of all, the water is warm. So when we tried out swimming in my parents' pool on Father's Day, getting in the water was kind of a shock because it was a little chillier than Emma was used to. However, she adapted pretty quickly and was excited to splash around. We've been swimming two more times since, and it's been a lot of fun!
